Recent Research Description

Cavity flameholder configurations are being considered as key elements in achieving flame stabilization in supersonic combusting ramjet (Scramjet) engines. Accurate prediction of these complex flow fields requires the calculation of larger turbulent eddy development in the shear layer over the cavity. However, details of the turbulent eddy structure within the incoming boundary layer and those on adjacent walls may be less important. Such flowfields may be amenable to simulation through hybrid techniques, which combine unsteady Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (URANS) modeling in regions in which the resolution of individual turbulence structures is not as important with Large Eddy Simulation (LES) strategies where the calculation of turbulent eddy development is desired. I will assist Principal Investigator, my advisor, Dr. Jack R. Edwards in the development and testing of hybrid URANS / LES modeling strategies for application to cavity flameholder configurations and related devices. The particular research thrusts are as follows:

  • Development of appropriate strategies for blending Reynolds stress models for wall-bounded flows with LES techniques for free-shear layers

  • Development of inflow / outflow boundary conditions for use with the hybrid equation system

  • Development of subgrid stress models appropriate for use within the hybrid modeling framework

  • Overall algorithm development, including development of methods for controlling numerical dissipation so as to enable sharp capturing of large eddy structures.

This work is in support of the unclassified SBIR Phase II Contract ``Development of Instrumentation and Computational Tools for Supersonic Cavity Flameholder Design," awarded to Taitech, Inc. by the Air Force Research Laboratory, Wright-Patterson AFB, OH.
